What is the different between FTTC and SoGEA

With the PSTN switch-off taking place in 2025. FTTC is being replaced by SoGEA, but what are the differences? FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and SoGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access) are both broadband connection types, but they have some key differences:

  1. Infrastructure: Both FTTC and SoGEA are made up of a copper line from the premises to the street cabinet and then a fibre connection to the exchange. The key difference lies in the requirement of a phone service. FTTC requires a phone service alongside the connection, whereas SoGEA does not.
  2. Services: SoGEA provides a data-only service, eliminating the need for a separate phone line. On the other hand, FTTC provides both data and voice services.
  3. Cost: With SoGEA, you are only paying for a broadband data connection. FTTC connections can be more expensive as you are paying for a phone line alongside the broadband connection.
  4. Migration: As SoGEA and FTTC both run on the same technologies, you can migrate your FTTC connection to a future-proofed SoGEA alternative.
